At just 31 years of age, Elbert Williams was an officer and charter member of the Brownsville, Tennessee branch of the NAACP. Several days after a delegation of folks called on the mayor to ask that they be permitted to vote. This enraged white folks in town so much that they launched a terror campaign on their black neighbors. On June 20, 1940, Uncle Elbert was taken from his home for questioning by the Sheriff elect and lured into a mob. My great grand uncle Elbert Williams paid the ultimate price for attempting to vote. Along with family, friends, and other persons of justice I am trying to keep his name alive and relevant. It’s the least I can do. This year, as I take more intentional steps towards my own voting activism, I am declaring that his birthday, October 15, will be designated as the Elbert Williams Voter Empowerment Day.
